A tear that stops where it starts

Wind is the thing that ends most greenhouse seasons in Canada, and it rarely does the damage all at once. A small puncture from a branch or a staple becomes a long split by the third gusty night, because a sheet of plain film has nothing inside it to interrupt a tear once the tear has somewhere to go. A tunnel greenhouse grow tent covered in woven ripstop fabric is built around that one problem.

It helps to be clear about what the covering is actually asked to survive. It carries snow, sheds rain, holds warmth overnight, takes ultraviolet light all summer, and flexes thousands of times a season wherever it touches a hoop. A greenhouse cover is not really a window; it is a structural membrane that happens to let light through.

Why woven fabric fails differently from film

Plain polyethylene is a continuous sheet. Stress concentrates at the tip of any nick, and once the material starts parting there is nothing to stop it, so a two inch cut can run the length of a panel in one night.

A ripstop greenhouse cover is woven from strands with a heavier thread laid in at intervals, forming a grid. A tear travels until it meets the next reinforcing strand and then stops, because the load is handed off to a fiber running across the direction of the split. The damage stays the size of a postage stamp instead of becoming a season-ending failure.

The pattern matters as much as the material. Threads laid in at intervals both ways mean a tear is interrupted whichever direction it tries to run, while reinforcement along one axis only leaves the other as weak as plain sheet. Grid spacing is usually stated somewhere in the specification, and closer is better.

Light you can see through is not the same as light plants use

The trade is clarity. Clear greenhouse film lets you see the sky; a woven greenhouse cover looks milky and cuts total transmission somewhat. What it gives back is scatter, so light arrives at the leaves from many angles instead of one.

Scattered light reaches lower leaves and the shaded side of a plant, which is the part a single strong beam never touches. For leafy crops in a walk in greenhouse that evenness often matters more than raw brightness, and it also means fewer hot spots scorching whatever sits directly under the peak at midday.

A patch is a repair, not a postponement

Because the tear is already contained, fixing one is genuinely a repair rather than a delaying tactic. Clean the area, dry it, and apply greenhouse repair tape across the hole so the patch overlaps the nearest reinforcing threads on each side. Done that way the mend carries load the same way the surrounding fabric does, and it does not quietly grow over the following month.

Where this cover earns its place

A woven cover suits exposed sites, long windy shoulder seasons, and anyone who would rather patch a small hole with tape than restretch a whole panel. On a sheltered lot where the structure comes down every autumn, plain film is cheaper and perfectly reasonable.

TMG Industrial supplies this size with the ripstop leno cover already fitted and roll-up sides for venting. Whichever material you settle on, what decides the life of a greenhouse cover is tension: one pulled tight across the hoops moves less, rubs less, and gives the wind nothing loose to work on.
